Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal told Dutch television he is battling prostate cancer.
Broadcaster RTL said the 70-year-old, who is currently on his third stint in the Netherlands,
spoke about his condition on its program Humberto on Sunday night,
while discussing a documentary about his life.
Van Gaal said of his players: “They don't know.
They see a blush on my cheeks and think,
'what a healthy (person) this is'. Of course that is not the case.”
He added: “I have been through many illnesses,
including with my own wife. So that's just part of life.
“(I) as a human being probably became richer because of all these experiences.
I thought that should also be in the movie.”
“Everyone at Manchester United is fully behind our former manager Louis van Gaal......
....in his battle with cancer. Sending you strength and courage, Louis.”
He had previously won league titles with Ajax,
which also led to Champions League glory in 1995,
Barcelona, AZ Alkmaar and Bayern Munich.
